An original, one-woman show about the life
of Marjory Stoneman Douglas |
||||||||||||||||
| Janina Birtolo continues her exploration of the lives of fascinating historical women with A VOICE FOR THE EVERGLADES, an original one-woman play about Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author of the pivotal book, The Everglades: River of Grass, and an environmentalist who continues to inspire. As the title of the play suggests, Douglas helped spread the message of how special the Everglades is and how vital to all of life in South Florida. Twenty years after the establishment of Everglades National Park in the same year her book was published she was asked again to come to the region’s aid to help defeat plans to build a jetport in the fragile area. Douglas responded by starting the Friends of the Everglades and becoming and an environmental activist at the age of 80! In 1993, then-President Bill Clinton awarded her the Congressional Medal of Honor to mark her efforts. She asked what had taken him so long. But the environment was just one of many passions in Douglas’ 108-year long life a reality Birtolo discovered through her research. Drawing upon what she learned, she crafted a play that charts Douglas’ remarkable life and incorporates her wry and singular sense of humor. Fully costumed, A VOICE FOR THE EVERGLADES is a lesson in history, as seen by one who both recorded and made it, and in the importance of caring for the lands and waters that give us life. The program runs about one hour and requires little space, allowing its performance nearly anywhere. Only a chair and a small table are needed; all other props are supplied. Post-performance question/answer sessions can also be arranged.
