Janina Birtolo-Most Affectionate Daughter
An original, one-woman show about the life
of Catherine de Medici, The Italian Queen of France
Continuing her exploration of the lives of great women in history, Janina Birtolo brings another fascinating character to life on stages throughout Southwest Florida. This new, original one-woman play is The Black Queen, a portrayal of Catherine de Medici, the Italian commoner who became one of the strongest Queens of France.

The Black Queen tells the intriguing story of the Renaissance woman who never expected to be a queen, yet who went on to be the power behind the throne through the reigns of three of her sons. During her early years in her new country, Catherine was despised and discounted as "the Italian woman." When she became Queen Regent, however, she proved how astute and skilled a leader she was - even during the Protestant Huguenot Rebellion. History has not always treated Catherine kindly, casting her as a villain, a poisoner and a necromancer. But her greatest "crime" may have been one she shared with her contemporary, Queen Elizabeth I of England - that of being an intelligent and powerful woman far ahead of her time.

While researching this captivating woman, Birtolo discovered that much of her "black" reputation seemed to spring from the beliefs of the times - whether those were common beliefs about women or strongly held opinions about what the Italians were likely to be like. Drawing upon her research, Birtolo was able to craft a more human portrait of this woman who defied all odds to become an important shaper of history.

Fully costumed, The Black Queen is a lesson in history, politics and religious conflict, wrapped in an entertaining package of wit, strategy and personal determination. Each program runs about one hour and requires little space, making it ideal for small groups. Only a chair and a small table are needed; all other props are supplied.

Post-performance question/answer sessions can also be arranged. For more information, references and/or to arrange a performance, contact Birtolo at (239) 592-1137 or visit her website at www.janinabirtolo.com.
