Janina Birtolo-Biography
I was born and raised in New Jersey, the daughter of a scientist and a stay-at-home mom who was greatly interested in the arts. Because of that unique combination, I grew up surrounded by music and theater and by discussions of evolution and chemistry–a true liberal arts education!

That education continued when I moved to Boston. Deciding to concentrate more on the arts than the sciences, I earned a BA in English at Boston College and an MS in television broadcasting at Boston University. Like my own mother, I was a stay-at-home mom (to two wonderful sons) for a few years after graduating. But then I discovered I could freelance for local newspapers, a situation that gave me the best of two worlds. That was more than 20 years ago (the last 15 spent in Naples, Florida) and, although my sons are grown, I still enjoy the freedom that freelancing gives me.

My writings are regularly published nationally and in such local publications as N Magazine, The Phil, Gulfshore Life, Times of the Islands and Naples Illustrated. I also do considerable writing for not-for-profit organizations. In 2001, I was chosen "Writer of the Year" by the Florida Magazine Association. Three years ago, I finally put that television degree to work by signing on as a field producer for Arts Edition Prime Time, an art magazine show produced by WGCU-TV.

Acting was always a second vocation for me, and I regularly appear with The Naples Players, Theatre Conspiracy in Fort Myers and other area troupes. For several years, I directed a teen theater troupe for Planned Parenthood of Collier County. In addition, I've written a number of plays, ranging from my one-woman shows to full cast productions, for both teens and adults. In Search of a Theatre, which I wrote to help raise funds for the Naples Players' new theater, won second place in the Great Hurricane Play Competition. I've performed and/or directed my original works for such organizations as Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Zonta Club of Collier County, the Brandeis University National Women's Committee and the Collier County Museum. In 2003, I received a grant from the United Arts Council of Collier County to underwrite five free performances of Most Affectionate Daughter, my original piece about Galileo's elder daughter.

Although I continue to write in a number of different disciplines, my one-woman shows have become a current focus. Being an avid reader and a history buff, I hope to use the lives of historical women to educate and inspire others and to tell captivating stories of courage and dedication.
